Writer: Amanda AmersonAmanda Amerson

The Heart of the Champion Training and Awards Ceremony occurred at the DuBose Porter Center, located within the Oconee Fall Line Technical College, on February 26, 2025. The event commenced promptly at 9:00 AM and continued until 1:00 PM, creating an atmosphere filled with enthusiasm and anticipation.

This gathering brought together a diverse group of participants, including high school students with disabilities eager to explore new opportunities and enhance their skills. Administrators and educators were present, demonstrating their commitment to fostering an inclusive environment where all students can thrive. Employers also attended, showcasing their dedication to creating pathways for young individuals to enter the workforce. Additionally, parents and service agency personnel played a crucial role in supporting the students, providing them with the necessary resources and encouragement to pursue their goals.

Throughout the ceremony, various presentations focused on essential topics such as self-determination, entrepreneurship, and job readiness. These sessions were designed to empower students by equipping them with the knowledge and skills needed to advocate for themselves and navigate the complexities of the job market. Participants listened to various presenters, including Lee Lister, Market Executive with Great Oaks Bank, Troy Windham, owner and operator of Windham Greenhouses, and Nick Kelch with East Georgia State College. The presenters engaged the students in interactive discussions emphasizing the importance of setting personal goals and developing a strong self-advocacy.

The awards segment of the ceremony recognized the outstanding achievements of students who had demonstrated exceptional commitment and progress in their personal and professional development. Award winners were selected from the ten Heart of Georgia Region school districts. Awards were presented to individuals who exemplified the spirit of perseverance and excellence, celebrating their hard work and dedication.

Overall, the Heart of the Champion Training and Awards Ceremony was not just an event; it was a celebration of empowerment, community, and the belief that with the right support and resources, every student can become a champion in their own right. The collaborative efforts of all involved created an enriching experience that left a lasting impact on everyone present, reinforcing the importance of inclusivity and opportunity for all individuals, regardless of their challenges.

We extend our gratitude to the Heart of Georgia Region School Districts, the Employers, Georgia Vocational Rehabilitation, High School High Tech, Heart of Georgia RESA, and the East Central GLRS consultants for making this event possible.
