The purpose of this guide is to provide school administrators strategies to systematically prepare their staff and building to increase the opportunities for students with disabilities to be educated in the least restrictive environment, access the general education curriculum, and be integrated members of the school community. Through these efforts,students with and without disabilities will be provided the opportunity for increased instruction in the grade level standards of the Georgia Standards of Excellence (GSE).

An Administrator's Guide to Least Restrictive Environment

Utilize a step to step guide for implementing LRE for students with the most significant cognitive disabilities.  The step by step guide is designed to help provide access to the general education environment for students who are typically instructed in a self-contained class for students with severe/profound intellectual disabilities.  Resources for the step by step process includes LRE/IEP Matrix, Making Action Plans (MAPS), and Circle of Friends.  The IEP determines the placesment of the student in the general eduation setting.

The Georgia Departmentof Education provides training materials for the six common models of Co-Teaching.   Learning targets include:

  • I can identify what stage of implementation knowledge I am in with co-teaching models. 

  • I can identify six commonly used approaches to providing instruction in a co-taugth classroom.

  • I can analyze a co-taught lesson and determine the models of co-teaching being utilized.

The modules can be utilized in school PLCs.
